Principals Message

Congratulations to the amazing students who make up our student council. These young people have already made an impact on our school. They organised the Harmony Day Concert that was thoroughly enjoyed by all. Other Term 1 activities included a Valentine's Day raffle and roses (raising a total of $1,489), an Easter raffle and the netball carnival tuckshop.
The council is currently organising a student survey on our tuckshop menu and will use this information to liaise with our Tuckshop Convenor. Unfortunately, bad weather has forced the postponement of both the swimming carnival and cross-country events this term. These events will be run in Term 2.
Report cards will be sent home no later than week 3 of Term 2. Please ensure you contact your child's teacher if you have any concerns. Also, Parent/ Teacher conversations will occur in Week 5, Monday 19th May. Bookings will open next term. A reminder that the school offers afternoon tutoring on Tuesday afternoons from 3 to 4pm.
Our ANZAC parade will be on Thursday 24th April Period 1, and I invite ISC students to march in the ANZAC parade on Friday 25th April.
Enjoy Easter and I look forward to seeing all students return on Tuesday 22 April. I will be on leave during weeks 1 and 2 of Term 2. Mrs Sally Hammett will be Acting Principal while I am away.

Principal

Hospitality Happenings
The Hospitality department have been busy this term with Certificate II in Cookery students catering for a number of different functions. These include the Senior Investiture morning tea, the CCRC International Women's Day High Tea at the Shire Hall, Wellbeing coffees at ISC and catering for visiting QUT undergraduate students. Students have worked as a team across several class groups to produce and serve some delicious food, whilst gaining valuable real-world experience and skills along the way.
Well done Cookery students!

North Queensland Senior State Honours Ensemble Program - SHEP
Five of our talented musicians recently had the amazing opportunity to take part in the North Queensland Senior SHEP (State Honours Ensemble Program), an event that brings together young musicians from across the region. Three of our students performed in the concert band, one sang in the choir, and one played in the strings ensemble. It was an incredible experience which encouraged them to grow as musicians while being surrounded by others who share the same passion for music.
SHEP was truly unforgettable. Our students worked with highly skilled conductors, tackled challenging and exciting pieces and experienced what it’s like to perform in a large ensemble. Playing music together on such a large scale helped them refine their skills, build confidence and develop a deeper appreciation for what they do. But beyond the music, one of the best parts of SHEP was the friendships formed along the way. Meeting like-minded musicians from different schools and coming together as one group made the experience even more special.
There’s something incredible about making music as part of a full concert band, choir or string ensemble. It’s a feeling that can’t be matched by solo practice. The energy, teamwork and sense of achievement after all the hard work made it a truly rewarding experience. Each of our students walked away feeling inspired, motivated and proud of what they accomplished.
We can’t wait to see more of our musicians take part in SHEP in the years to come!

International Women's Day
Riley Jones, Hayley Wollschlager and Tahlia Maund, three of our student leaders for 2025, represented the college at the Cassowary Coast Regional Council International Women's Day celebration on Friday, 7 March.
The theme for this year was March Forward and after a delicious morning tea prepared and served by our Hospitality students, the girls joined a panel of students from other schools to address questions about the progress and future of gender equality. Our young ladies were beautifully presented, extremely well-prepared and articulate in their responses. They were a credit to the college, their families and themselves.
Well done Riley, Hayley and Tahlia!

Instrumental Music Camp
What better way to kick off the year than with an incredible two-night stay at Daradgee Environmental Education Centre for our 2025 Instrumental Band Camp! From the moment we arrived, the energy was high and it was clear this camp was going to be something special. The days were packed with rehearsals for our concert band, string ensemble and jazz band, where we tackled exciting new pieces and worked hard to refine our sound. Whether we were mastering tricky rhythms, perfecting harmonies or just enjoying the thrill of playing together, every rehearsal was full of determination and enthusiasm. It was amazing to hear how much progress we made in such a short time!
Of course, band camp isn’t just about the music—it’s also about building friendships and making memories. We took part in some hilarious and unforgettable team-building activities with highlights including Faulty Towers and 3, 2, 1… Clap. These games had us thinking on our feet, working together and, most importantly, laughing until our sides hurt. One of the biggest highlights of the camp was the Talent Show, where everyone got a chance to showcase their creativity. With the theme “The World is Ending!”, the performances were nothing short of legendary. From dramatic skits to laugh-out-loud moments, every act brought something unique to the stage, and the crowd was loving every second of it.
We can’t forget to mention the amazing food! Every meal was a highlight, giving us all the energy we needed for long days of playing, performing and having fun. By the time camp ended, we had not only improved as musicians but also grown closer as a group. The friendships we strengthened, the music we created and the memories we made will stay with us for the rest of the year. It was the perfect way to start 2025 and we can’t wait for all the exciting things ahead!

Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) Update
During Term 1, we have unpacked the following focuses as part of our commitment to teaching the expected behaviours as outlined in our ISC Pillars and Behaviour Matrix:-
- Respect our School;
- Being a Learner – Attendance;
- Being a Learner – using the Instructional Learning Position; and
- Responsibility in Assessment time.
The Student Council and ISC Staff have also worked together to redraft our Behaviour Matrix which breaks down the expectations of our Four Pillars in different settings around the school - We are Learners, We show Responsibility, We are Safe and We show Respect. The updated Behaviour Matrix can be seen below.
Please talk to your child at home about how they are showing Responsibility this assessment time (our current focus). Peppertree Restaurant
Year 12 Certificate II in Cookery students recently hosted a highly successful Peppertree Restaurant function at ISC. Students spent the day preparing food and setting up the Restaurant for 80 guests, returning in the evening for service. Students worked hard both individually and as a team, showing initiative and maturity, to produce high quality food and service, serving a delicious Mediterranean themed menu.
Congratulations to all Certificate II in Cookery Peppertree Restaurant participants for a job well done .

Rugby League Success
Congratulations to our Grade 8 Boys rugby league team who defeated Bentley Park College at our Gala Day on Thursday at Callendar Park.
It was a hard-fought battle in hot conditions but ISC came away with the win 34-20.

JCU/BLA Careers in Health Breakfast
Many students aspire to pursue a career in the Health Industry. With so many paths to choose from, it can be a challenge to settle on a career. On Friday 7 March, Year 11 and 12 students attended the Business Liaison Association's and James Cook University's Careers in Health Breakfast at the Pullman, Cairns. The students listened to a panel of six JCU delegates covering industries in Heath including Pharmacy, Speech Therapy, Medicine, Occupational Therapy, Physiotherapy and Nursing. The panellists shared their career experiences and explained why they chose that field. Students then had the opportunity to ask questions of the panel members and enjoy a lovely breakfast. This event runs each year and the Business Liaison Association and James Cook University make it excellent.

Appreciating our Skilled Support Staff
On Thursday 20th March, our grounds staff took the day to attend the School Officers JAG network meeting, where they engaged in insightful discussions with other School Officers on all things Grounds and Facilities.
Their willingness to share their expertise and collaborate truly enhances the way they work together with all sectors of the school.
We are all incredibly lucky to have such dedicated and knowledgeable professionals. Their expertise and commitment makes my role as Business Manager that much easier, and I deeply appreciate everything they do.
